The opening ceremony of the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Mumbai revealed a revolutionary surprise: the possible inclusion of eSports in the Olympic firmament. At first, at least in “demonstration” form.

Mumbai: The New Olympic Frontier

Mumbai, with its unique balance between a rich history and an effervescent present, provided the ideal stage for such a progressive announcement. IOC President Thomas Bach highlighted how India is enthusiastically embracing the Olympic ethos, emphasizing the vital role of sport in the country. The Honorable Nita Ambani, an IOC member, was praised for her efforts to promote sports and athletes in India through the Reliance Foundation.

eSports: The Future of the Olympics?

Bach addressed a crucial topic: eSports. With more than three billion people involved in video games and 500 million of them engaged in eSports, this form of competition has become a powerhouse. This predominantly young audience represents the future of the Olympic movement. Bach revealed that a new eSports Commission has been charged with exploring the feasibility of eSports Olympic Games. To be sure, eSports is already a reality well established on most of the best online gambling portals with a section dedicated to betting on the sport.

The IOC’s Journey to eSports

Since the IOC began approaching eSports in 2018, it has sought an integration that respects Olympic values. This commitment has grown over time, culminating in the Olympic Virtual Series and Olympic eSports Week in Singapore, which saw significant interaction between the Olympic and eSports communities.

Embracing Technology: An Imperative for the IOC

In addition to eSports, artificial intelligence (AI) was another predominant theme in Bach’s speech. He stressed the importance of technology adoption and the need for a change of mindset within the Olympic Movement. The IOC is already working with a team of experts to navigate the rapid evolution of AI.

Looking to the Future: Paris 2024 and Beyond

Bach also expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which embody a new era of innovation. These games have received support from world leaders, including those in the G20, who see the Olympics as a symbol of peace and unity.

Concluding his remarks, Bach expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment and support of the Olympic Games. This opening ceremony marks the beginning of a new phase, in which the traditional and the modern merge, bringing Olympism into a new digital age.
