Belgium and Ukraine draw 0-0, Belgium advances to knockout stage. Belgium and Ukraine played to a scoreless draw in a Group E match at Euro 2024. The result secured Domenico Tedesco’s team a place in the knockout stage as runners-up in the group, while the Eastern Europeans were eliminated from the tournament. The other match in the group, between Slovakia and Romania, also ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving all four teams with four points.
Belgium showed their class as early as the 7th minute. Kevin De Bruyne set up Romelu Lukaku with a masterful pass, but his diagonal shot went straight into the hands of Anatoliy Trubin, who had closed down the angle. However, Ukraine showed that they would not go down without a fight. Roman Yaremchuk shot from distance in the 20th minute, but goalkeeper Koen Casteels made the save.
In the middle of the first half, Kevin De Bruyne complained to referee Anthony Taylor that he was being blinded by a laser before taking a free kick. The ball was placed at a long distance, but the Manchester City star delivered a superb free kick, the ball just wide of the right post.
As the game progressed, the Ukrainians started to attack more, as the group standings did not suit them. Artem Dovbyk fired a shot from the penalty area but was well blocked.
In the 73rd minute, Yannick Carrasco received the ball outside the penalty area and fired a good shot into the bottom left corner. Anatoliy Trubin made a great save with a superb reflex.
Shortly after, Ukraine wasted a great chance. After a wonderful attack, Artem Dovbyk received the ball in the penalty area, shot, but just inches from the goal.
Ukraine had the initiative for the rest of the match, while Belgium relied on counter-attacks, but no goal was scored and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
