Scotland and Switzerland played out a 1-1 draw in their second Group A match at Euro 2024. The “Tartan Army” took the lead in the 13th minute when Scott McTominay’s shot deflected off Fabian Schar and into the net. Xherdan Shaqiri equalized for Switzerland with a stunning long-range strike in the middle of the first half. Goals from Dan Ndoye and substitute Breel Embolo were later ruled out for offside.

Early Goal from McTominay

After a quiet start to the match, the “Tartan Army” shocked their opponents by taking the lead early on. Switzerland took a corner, which was easily cleared by the British, and Andrew Robertson surged forward down the middle of the pitch.

The Liverpool star combined with Callum McGregor on the left, who didn’t control the ball initially well. However, he recovered and passed back to Scott McTominay, whose shot deflected off Fabian Schar and into the net of Yann Sommer – 1-0 to Scotland.

Shaqiri Levels the Score

Switzerland’s pressure from the start of the match eventually paid off. Anthony Ralston made a poor pass in his own half to a teammate. Xherdan Shaqiri intercepted the ball and shot on the move without hesitation, and the ball flew spectacularly into the net of Angus Gunn – 1:1.

Chances for Both Sides

Shortly after the restart of the second half in Cologne, the “Watchmakers” had a great chance, with Granit Xhaka sending a high ball towards Dan Ndoye. He eliminated Kieran Tierney and found himself one-on-one with Angus Gunn, but his shot flew wide.

After exactly an hour of play, the Scots had to deal with another problem, as Kieran Tierney had to leave with a muscle strain in Cologne.

In the 67th minute, the Scots had a free-kick. Andrew Robertson crossed for Grant Hanley, and the defender fought hard and headed the ball, but it hit the right post of Sommer.

For the “Crusaders”, Ludogorets striker Kwado Duah did not appear on the pitch, remaining an unused substitute by Murat Yakin.

In the course of the match, the referees disallowed two goals for the “Watchmakers” for offside, while Grant Hanley of the “Tartan Army” hit the bar in the second half.

Group Standings

After the second matches in Group A of UEFA EURO 2024, Germany are the clear leaders with six points. Switzerland are second with four, while Scotland have one and Hungary have none. In the next round of the group stage, the Germans will play Switzerland, while Scotland will face Hungary.

Overall, the match was an exciting and entertaining affair, with both teams showcasing their attacking prowess. Scotland will be disappointed not to have held on to their early lead, but they will be pleased with a point that keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
