Is there any way to guarantee that the bets we make on horse racing will be successful? Of course not. However, certain strategies, if implemented, can bring us closer to earning a good amount of money.

If you’re new to horse racing betting, I suggest starting with our horse racing beginners guide. Then, go straight to my previous blog post, where you will discover more info on the horse racing odds and payouts.

In my third blog post on this subject, I will focus on the five most popular horse racing betting systems. Some are suitable for everyone to use; others should not be used by beginners. Remember, no matter how tempting a strategy may seem to you if you don’t have the experience to implement it properly, don’t use it.

The Dutching System

The Dutching horse racing system is undoubtedly one of the most popular among horse racing enthusiasts. With it, you bet on more than one horse who you think will win.

If you are a beginner in horse race betting, this strategy is quite suitable for you. What you must do is to research all the horses who will participate in the race and place your bets on your favorites. Yes, losing here is guaranteed as there is only one winner, but if you have done your research properly, then the winner will be among the horses you’ve placed your bet on.

Pros Of Dutching System

One of the main advantages of the Dutching horse racing system is that it is suitable for beginners or people who do not have much experience. Yes, it is guaranteed that at least one bet will be lost, but it increases the chances of a winning bet. So, if you think two horses have an equal chance of winning, use this system and bet on both.

Cons Of Dutching System

Again, losing at least one bet is 100% guaranteed, and if you bet on even more than two horses, the lost bets increase. It’s good to judge whether the potential win is worth the guaranteed losses.

80/20 System

This is the updated version of the Dutching System. The aim here is to spread the bet between two horses, with 80% going to your main favorite and 20% to your second favorite.

Unlike the Dutching system, however, the bet in the 80/20 horse racing system can be spread over two separate races. That is, you bet 80% on your favorite horse from one race and 20% on your favorite horse from another.

The 80/20 system does not oblige you to bet on one race only.

Pros Of 80/20 System

It can be used if you plan to bet on more than one race. Also, anyone more advanced in horse race betting knows that twists and turns happen in the final seconds. If you don’t want to be unpleasantly surprised at the last moment, the 80/20 system serves as insurance that even if your top favorite loses, not everything is lost.

Cons Of 80/20 System

Of course, there is no guarantee that if one of your favorites loses, the other will win. Just like in other horse racing betting systems, you can lose everything you have bet.

But isn’t that the thrill of sports betting in general?

Laying the Favorite System

The most popular horse racing strategy is to bet on your favorite to win the race. In Laying the favorite horse racing system, it is a bet against the favorite, i.e., you bet that the favorite will lose.

It is important to clarify that to use this system you must have done good research beforehand. You shouldn’t just bet against the favorite and hope it loses. Would the ground conditions make it difficult for the horse or is it just not showing its best form and is it worth betting against it?

As with anything in betting and online gambling in general, just make informed decisions!

Pros Of Laying the Favorite System

If you are a true fan of horse racing betting, this strategy can prove to be quite profitable for you. Don’t miss the daily research on the top competitors, their current status, and the field where the competition will take place.

If you’ve done your homework properly, you’ll know whether to stick with this strategy or switch to a more suitable one.

Cons Of Laying the Favorite System

If you lose, you will owe the house a large amount of money. Much larger than the one you bet. So, if you are new to sports betting, this is a strategy that I, as an expert, do not recommend!

Trifecta System

Warning: This is one of the hardest horse racing strategies!

Why?

It’s hard enough to pick one winner, but can you imagine three? And not only do you pick the three winners, but they must be in the right order. This is an almost impossible task…

Almost.

Use this strategy in races with fewer competitors, as there is a higher chance of guessing the top three in the correct order.

Pros Of Trifecta System

The advantages are quite clear: even if you make a small bet on Trifecta if it is profitable, you will win a lot of money. Many players place small bets on several trifectas in the hope that at least one will turn out to be the winning one. If this is the case, the winning amount will be many times the bets they placed and they come out as winners.

Cons Of Trifecta System

It is extremely difficult to win using Trifecta! I recommend only advanced players rely on this betting system. Even for them, it takes time before they see any positive results.

Simple advice: If you decide to use the Trifecta horse racing system, do it with a small budget, as the risk of losing it is high.

Pick 3 System

In this system, you must pick the winners of three races. Only if all three horses win, then your bet is considered successful.

Pros Of Pick 3 System

If you have favorites in three races, bet on Pick 3 horse racing system instead of making three separate stand-alone bets. With a successful bet, your winnings will be huge!

Cons Of Pick 3 System

Here, as with all other strategies, if you haven’t done your research, don’t risk it! Even if only one of your favorites loses, your bet fails, and you lose.

Can Horse Racing Betting Systems Guarantee Profit?

In a perfect world – yes, but in the real world – not. Use these systems to see what works best for you and apply it in the most adequate and correct way.

As I mentioned several times in this article, always do your research before using a strategy. What works for others may not work for you.

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, there are strategies for people at every level. Choosing the right horse racing strategy ensures that the decisions you make in your bets are informed and the best you could make at the time.

If you find any of these five strategies interesting, test them on the BetMGM Sportsbook platform. And remember, above all, have fun, and the winnings will come!
